Galapagos journals Day 16

Dear diary,

Happy pancake day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I might have overdone the exclamation marks but today was awesome!

The first thing we did was to go snorkelling early in the morning to avoid another rain downpour. We went to Playa Tijeretas which was a little rocky bay perfect for snorkelling. The water was a bit murky probably because of the heavy rain yesterday but it was still very nice and full of surprises. In the first three minutes, we encountered one sea lion and swam so close to it - it was fantastic!

After a while, when I decided to get out and when I got close to the steps, I was suddenly taken aback by another sea lion swimming in right in front of me, and kind of playing with me. It was such fun! These sea lions are so social, I can't quite believe it!

We then moved to a beach near by called Playa Punta Carola, which is mainly a surfer beach. Because it was low tide, you couldn't get in the water without scrapping yourself on the rocks. But a very young sea lion was bobbing about near the shore, we couldn't resist and got in the sea again. It was so playful and cheeky. It was chasing sticks around the water and playing with us in its own way. So at ease with humans, quite incredible.

The day only got better after that. Dan prepared his famous pancakes which we gulped down faster than he could make them. Yum yum yum! I love pancake day!

In the afternoon, we went down to the harbour where whole groups of sea lions are. The babies and young ones were always playing, jumping in and out of the water like dolphins.

The day ended back at the Playa Punta Carola for a magnificent sunset. When Ismene and I were playing in the waves, we were getting carried up and down the beach so far. It was brilliant. I found it unbelievable how the tide had changed the beach so much.
